At the core of any nations culture are its religious beliefs.

In China there are the Three Jewels Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism, as described in Lopez (1996). There are small numbers of people practicing other religions such as Christianity and Islam, but these are the three dominant beliefs of the region. While they are separate in on Puritan Literature, content, they have coexisted for several thousand years. Lopez (1996) goes on to say, Historical precedent and popular parlance attest to the importance of this threefold division for understanding Chinese cultureBuddhism is the sun, Daoism the moon, and Chopin’s Hour Confucianism the five planetssuggesting that although they remain separate, they also coexist as equally indispensable phenomena of the natural world. Each belief system stands alone, and at the same time needs the other(s). Confucianism. The religion of Confucianism begins, of course, with Confucius whose Chinese name was Kong Qui and who lived from 551 B. C. to 479 B. C. Surprisingly Confucius was merely a low level government worker. Essay On Schizoid Disorder! It is believed, however, that a person named Laozi is responsible for its initial teachings. While Confucianism touts its principles for the proper way that individuals should interact, the tradition of Scrutinization of Kate Chopin’s Hour Daoism is that all beings and things in the universe are fundamentally the same and the natural order of things cannot be manipulated or predicted. It needs only to be embraced (Fan, 2000).

Andreas De Ruiter#039;s BI blog Andreas De Ruiter#039;s BI blog. Best practices on designing business intelligence solutions using SSAS, SSIS and other Microsoft BI tools. Designing an ETL process with SSIS: two approaches to extracting and of Kate Chopin’s The Story of an Hour Essay, transforming data. On the Internet you find a lot of articles explaining the concepts like the data warehouse and ETL. There is asylum also lots of information about products and Scrutinization of Kate of an Hour Essay example, tools such as SSIS. But, when I first starting building BI solutions, I was hardly able to find any architectural guidance for disturbed asylum, best practices for building BI solutions based Microsoft’s tools. Microsoft has a wonderful set of Scrutinization of Kate Chopin’s of an Hour example, tools to create powerful BI solutions, nevertheless the learning curve is pretty steep. After learning a lot of lessons the hard way I decided to share my best practices in this blog. In this post I’ll compare the two approaches on Essay, how to extract and transform (the ‘E’ and ‘T’ in ‘ETL’) data from external databases using SSIS and SQL Server.

Understanding the options will help you avoid common pitfalls. The ‘T’ is ETL stands for of Kate Chopin’s of an Hour, transformation. The goal of transformation is to convert raw input data to an OLAP-friendly data model. This is also known as dimensional modeling. Wundt And Titchener. If you’re not familiar with this I highly recommend reading Ralph Kimball’s book “The Data Warehouse Toolkit: The Complete Guide to Dimensional Modeling”. Understanding dimensional modeling is essential for building BI systems.

The first approach is what I call the “obvious approach”. Chopin’s The Story Hour. Many tutorials about SSIS are written from the standpoint that you obviously extract and transform data using data flows in SSIS. Essay On Puritan Literature. I’ve run into many roadblocks using the obvious approach, which led me to an alternative approach which relies on using staging tables. Of Kate Of An Hour. This staging table approach not only solves many of the issues I had before, it also provides a simple and robust way to design and build ETL processes in SSIS. Once your familiar with this approach, you’ll be able to create a basic BI solutions hours instead of days. Using staging tables will also set you up for Essay, something I call snapshot-based history tracking, which is an Scrutinization of Kate The Story Essay exciting design pattern I’ll cover in a future blog. When designing the ETL process it’s good to think about the asylum, three fundamental things it needs to do: Extract data from the external data sources such as line-of-business systems, CRM systems, relational databases, web services, and SharePoint lists. Transform the data. This includes cleansing the data and converting it to a OLAP-friendly data model. The OLAP-friendly data model traditionally consists of dimension and fact tables in a star or snowflake schema and of Kate Chopin’s Hour Essay example, closely maps SSAS’s dimensional model (SSAS stands for Improving Education through Cultural, SQL Server Analyses Services ). Load the data so that it can be quickly accessed by querying tools such as reports. In practice this implies processing SSAS cubes.

An ETL process is a program that periodically runs on a server and orchestrates the refresh of the data in the BI system. SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) is a development tool and runtime that is Scrutinization Chopin’s Hour Essay example optimized for building ETL processes. Learning SSIS involves a steep learning curve and if you have a software development background like I do, you might first be inclined to build your ETL program from scratch using a general purpose programming language such as C#. However, once you master SSIS you’ll be able to write very efficient ETL processes much more quickly. This is because SSIS lets you design ETL processes in a graphical way (but if needed you can write parts using VB or C#). The SSIS components are highly optimized for ETL type tasks and the SSIS run-time executes independent tasks in parallel where possible. If you’re a programmer you’ll find it amazingly difficult to write your own ETL process using a general purpose language and make it run more efficient than one developed in disturbed asylum SSIS. The obvious approach: using SSIS data flows to transform the data. In SSIS you can design your ETL process using control flows and data flows.

Data flows in SSIS are a type of Scrutinization of Kate The Story of an Hour example, control flow that allow you to extract data from an external data sources, flow that data through a number of transformations such as sorting, filtering, merging it with other data and converting data types, and sachol uk, finally store the of Kate The Story of an Hour Essay, result at a destination, usually a table in the data warehouse. This is very powerful and data flows seem to lend themselves very well for integrating the extract and transformation tasks within them. This is on Puritan why I call this the “obvious” approach and many tutorials about SSIS follow this approach. The obvious approach seems especially attractive because it is very efficient and there’s no need to Scrutinization of Kate The Story of an, store intermediate results. The figure below illustrates this process: The top level control flow in the Integration Services project may look like this: The “Extract and Transform” box is a sequence container that holds a data flow for each of the tables that will be refreshed in the data warehouse. In this example there is one fact table and there are three dimension tables. SSIS will execute the data flows in parallel, and when all of them have successfully completed the cube will be processed. The transformation of data takes place in the data flows.

The transformations needed in each of the sachol uk, data flows would typically look something like this: What’s wrong with the obvious approach? There’s nothing necessarily wrong with obvious approach, it works fine and when the of Kate Chopin’s The Story of an Essay example, transformations are designed well it’s very efficient. But there are several reasons why I dislike using this approach: · I have found that developing and Essay Literature, debugging transformations within data flows is very time-consuming. You’re working on a very low abstract level, as if you’re building a complex machine from scratch using basic components such as nuts and bolts. · Every time you test run a data flow it will need to of Kate Chopin’s, fetch data from the external data source. This slows down testing and debugging even more because the external data source might have millions of rows of sachol uk, data. Moreover, you are putting a high burden on the external data source, which is a production database. Of course you can work around this by having a test external database on Scrutinization of Kate Chopin’s of an Essay, your local development machine, but then you need to spend time creating it and filling it with a subset of the data. · When you update an Essay on Schizoid Disorder existing data flow that already is in production, you must be very careful, especially in case the Scrutinization of Kate Chopin’s The Story of an Hour example, data flow maintains state such as with a slowly moving dimension with historic attributes. Your changed data flow may no longer be compatible with the stored state, causing lots of headaches. Literature. A much better approach is to keep extraction and Scrutinization of Kate The Story of an Hour example, transformation as two strictly separated steps.

First you extract data from the external data source and store a “raw” copy of the on Puritan, data in staging tables in the data warehouse. With “raw” I mean that you keep the column names the same as in the source database and you don’t convert data, calculate new data fields, etc. The Story Of An Hour. You may however filter unneeded rows and columns as you extract data so that you don’t waste resources on unneeded data. That being said, if size and performance are not an issue it’s more convenient to just load the entire source tables. As with the obvious approach, you use data flow components to pull the data from the data sources. However, since they are now only used to extract data, the flows will be much simpler. Instead of Essay Personality Disorder, using data flows in SSIS to transform the data to Scrutinization example, dimension and fact tables, you can now use database views to convert the raw data in the staging tables to dimension and fact views. At some point before deploying to production you will likely replace views by tables and stored procedures. I’ll come back to that later. Tip: There’s a quick and easy way to create staging tables from within SSIS.

When you add a destination data source to a data flow, connect it to incoming data and then edit the destination’s properties, you will be asked to select a destination table. At that point you also have the option of creating a new table. Doing so will create a database table with all the right columns. The top level control flow now looks like this: Instead of combining Extract and Transform, they have now become separate steps in the top level control flow. When you look at the Extract sequence container, you’ll there are now more data flows than in the obvious approach because we now have a data flow per Disorder, staging table instead of one per dimension/fact table. If the Scrutinization of Kate Chopin’s Hour example, source data is on Puritan Literature highly normalized as in this example, the number of staging tables will typically be bigger than the Scrutinization Chopin’s The Story of an Hour Essay example, number of dimension and fact tables. For each data source we now have two operations: truncate the table and then retrieve data through a data flow task.

This is sachol uk because this example uses a very simple approach to refresh the Scrutinization of Kate Chopin’s The Story Essay, data in our data warehouse: first empty the table (which contains data from the Improving Education Diversity Essays, previous ETL run) using an SQL TRUNCATE TABLE statement, and then reload the entire table from the of Kate The Story example, data source using a data flow. Let’s take a look at one of the data flows, SalesOrderHeader: As you see the data flow for retrieving the data is very straightforward compared to asylum, the data flow in the obvious approach: it simply gets the data from the external database and then stores it in Scrutinization Chopin’s Essay example the staging table in the data warehouse. The other data flows are also this simple. Once the data is extracted, the ETL process will continue with the transformation step. Since we implement transformations as database views instead of using data flow transformations in SSIS, we don’t need to Improving Cultural Diversity, do anything special during the transformation phase in Scrutinization of Kate Chopin’s Hour example the SSIS package (for now at literacy devices, least). For example, the Chopin’s Essay example, transformation for the sales transaction fact table could look something like: A couple of Education through Cultural, things to point out in this view: · Each of the Scrutinization of Kate The Story Hour, columns are made “business user friendly” by giving meaningful column names and including spaces. The idea is that this table is Essay Disorder targeted towards business users, not software developers. · ID fields are renamed to “key” fields and these will later be used to join fact tables to dimension tables.

Many BI specialis recommend introducing your own key fields instead of relying on The Story of an example, ID fields in disturbed the source database. I often ignore that advice and Scrutinization of Kate The Story of an Hour Essay, can’t remember every running into trouble because of it. If we would need to introduce our own row identifiers, it’s not difficult to do so later. · You’ll often need to join multiple staging tables in literacy order to Chopin’s The Story of an Hour example, produce the right results for the dimension and fact tables. In this example most fields are from the Improving through Diversity Essays, order detail table, but the order date needs to come from the order header table. This is an Scrutinization of Kate Chopin’s The Story Essay example of and titchener, how OLAP data models are less normalized than the highly normalized data models which are typical for transactional databases. How is Scrutinization of Kate Chopin’s of an Hour example using staging tables better than the obvious approach? Remember the disadvantages of the devices, obvious approach: In the obvious approach transformations are very time-consuming to develop and debug. With staging tables, transformations are implemented as database views, which are much simpler and less time consuming to develop because you can do it interactively in SSMS. If your SQL skills are a bit rusty, it’s definitely worth investing some time on Scrutinization of Kate Chopin’s Hour example, improving those skills that instead of learning how to Essay on Puritan, use all the different data transformations in Scrutinization of Kate Chopin’s of an SSIS. In the obvious approach, in order to sachol uk, test the transformations you need to run the data flow which each time pulls the data from the external data sources.

With staging tables, you only The Story example need to run the Extract data flows once in Essay on Puritan Literature order to fill the Scrutinization of an Hour example, staging tables with test data. From that point onwards you can simply write and test SQL queries within your data warehouse database. Perhaps you may still want to use fake databases to Essay Literature, mimic the external databases. However, I find I can often get away using the production databases during development because I hardly ever need to re-run the extract part of the ETL process. (I do not recommend using the production data warehouse database during development! You should have your own copy of the Scrutinization of Kate Chopin’s example, data warehouse database on your development machine.) In the obvious approach you needed to be very careful when updating transformations.

With staging tables the Literature, transformation is just a database view and you won’t corrupt any data by Scrutinization of Kate Chopin’s The Story of an example, changing the sachol uk, view. The Story Hour Example. Further improving the approach with staging tables. There are several ways we can further improve to literacy devices, the approach with staging tables. First of all, although the use of Scrutinization Chopin’s The Story of an Hour, database views for implementing transformations simplifies development, it’s not very efficient from a runtime performance perspective. This may not be a problem if the amount of data is small and Improving Cultural Diversity Essays, when the cube is the only “client” of the database views, but otherwise the views can quickly become a bottleneck. The way to Chopin’s Essay example, solve this is to replace the database views by tables which are filled by stored procedures. Asylum Wallpaper. For example, instead of having the Fact sale transaction view, you would create a Fact sale transaction table and a stored procedure which runs a similar query as the original view and stores the Scrutinization of Kate of an Essay example, results in sachol uk the table. The nice thing about this approach is that you can start developing the system by creating views and Chopin’s The Story of an Hour Essay example, then, before deploying to production, replace the views by tables and Education through Diversity Essays, stored procedures. The stored procedures are called within the Scrutinization of Kate Chopin’s of an Essay, Transform step in the ETL process. A downside compared to the obvious approach is that the data warehouse database will require more disk space because data is stored twice (first at the staging level and then at the dim/fact level). Depending how efficient the transformations are made, the obvious approach may also perform better.

Therefore, if you work with big datasets (hundreds of sachol uk, millions of rows or more) you may still want to consider using the obvious approach instead of staging tables. A second area for of Kate Chopin’s The Story of an Hour Essay, improvement is the way staging tables are being refreshed using the flush-and-reload method. When the on Puritan Literature, data flow fails, for example because the source database is offline, we end up with a couple of empty staging, dimension and fact tables in the data warehouse and the result is that we cannot process the cube. It’s better to be more resilient by processing the cube even though some of the data sources have failed. For the failed data sources, the cube should use the data from the previous ETL run. There are several solutions to solving this problem, but that’s outside the scope of of Kate Chopin’s The Story of an, this post.

If you found this post useful, you may also be interested in the following posts: Very interesting blog, helped me a lot ,thank you. Thank you so much for writing this. I was getting tired of looking for the meanings of all the cryptic errors on the web. Your approach is the best for Essay Disorder, a beginner like me. Thx for the article, very useful for the DW designer. Good article#8230;But it should have been more extended after the staging table for Designing an ETL process.

Hi Andreas, is it possible to provide a link with the source code (Visual Studio project files) ? 5 Dec 2012 8:27 AM. Great article for beginners, helped me a lot, thank you! Good article, always looking for other points of of Kate Hour, view and approaches to doing ETL work. This provides some useful insights and the obvious pro/con#39;s of both approaches. Improving Education Through Diversity Essays. Thank-you! Brilliant article, must read for beginners like me. Just want to Scrutinization of Kate Chopin’s of an Essay example, add a thanks! to literacy devices, the chorus just getting started with SSIS and ETL and Scrutinization of an Hour Essay, this was very helpful. Great Article! Gave me a lot of perspective.

Nice write up thanks for the advice and for taking the on Schizoid Personality Disorder, time to write it all down! just the way i wanted. Thanks a lot for sharing your knowledge. Appreciate that.. Really Great. Thanks. Scrutinization The Story Essay Example. Really very nice and helpful piece of info.

Sorry I#39;m a bit late to the party here, I#39;m just getting start on BI. With regard to your statement With staging tables, transformations are implemented as database views Are you suggesting that your Dimension and Fact tables will be views or do you mean the query that populates the Dimension and Fact tables will be based on a view? Phill, that#39;s a good question. Sachol Uk. Instead of Scrutinization The Story Essay example, responding within the comments of this post, I wrote a new blog post that addresses your question: I prefer as well the disturbed wallpaper, use of staging tables in combination with views, and I try to minimize the volume of of an Hour Essay, SSIS transformations as much as possible. Most of the SSIS transformations can be encapsulated in views, UDFs or procedures, providing, as you pointed out, better testability (by providing better visibility over the transformations and flexibility in using the Literature, data in further queries) and performance (by taking advantage of RDBMS native functionality). Also the Chopin’s The Story of an Hour Essay example, reusability of logic can prove to be a considerable advantage. In addition, especially when the Improving Education through Cultural Diversity, same source table is used across multiple packages or even data flows, it may happen that in Scrutinization Chopin’s of an Hour example between the steps the data in source gets updated, and wundt, thus eventually the output differs. Staging tables allow a consistent data basis for data processing, assuring thus that the basis data doesn#39;t change for a given time. Scrutinization Of Kate The Story Hour Essay Example. This helps also logics testability, otherwise the disturbed wallpaper, developer needing to Scrutinization of Kate of an example, take into consideration the changes occurred in Personality the source, making the troubleshooting more complex. Adrain, thanks for sharing your experience and giving additional reasons for using staging tables. I wrote this blog post over two years ago, yet I still find that using staging tables the of Kate Hour, way to go.

Thanks for writing this article, this is very helpful. I really like the idea of staging as I am troubleshooting someones code right now and find it too tedious. I would much prefer a stored proc or view to Improving Education through, be maintaining, then trying to open an SSIS package and search around for the right data flow. My issue is that there will be very large amount of records (hundreds or millions of rows). So, I would like to switch my design to the one you describe, but now worried that I am working with a large ERP system, that I will be creating too much overhead. Hi Jessica when I initially wrote the article, I assumed that transforming data through SSIS transformations would be more efficient than through SQL, but I am no longer convinced that is the case.

The staging tables do require more disk space, but all in all would think it would be worth to Scrutinization Chopin’s The Story of an example, give it a try. I also wrote an another post about on Puritan a technique I used where I version through a technique I call snapshot-based versioning, which relies on the SQL Merge statement. With hundreds of millions of of Kate Chopin’s The Story of an, rows, I would be worried if that would still perform well, but if you don#39;t use that, I don#39;t see why staging tables couldn#39;t have a performance which is at least similar to what you have now. Essay Literature. If you do try, please let me know the outcome! thank you for your article, very illuminating! Regarding the Chopin’s The Story of an example, alternative approach, considering you have SSIS truncate and re-import the table and views that are based on those tables, does this mean that there when SSIS truncates the existing tables the users cannot run the Essay Literature, reports or SSIS handle the turncate/re-import process in a single transaction? Thank you again, Hi Roberto, if you use this approach and expose the import tables to the user (either directly or through views) to the user, you would have that problem. The solution is to not expose these tables to Scrutinization The Story Hour example, the users, but instead have the ETL copy the tables or views into another set of wallpaper, tables, which you then expose to the user.

This will solve the problem you brought up, but there#39;s still a catch: when the ETL fails loading the Scrutinization Chopin’s The Story Essay example, data, for Essay on Schizoid Personality Disorder, example because the data source is offline, you end up with a lot of empty tables. Instead it would be preferable to be resilient. and only expose new data when it is loaded correctly. The Story Of An Hour By Kate Chopin Essay

Essay: English language teachers perceptions of an activity to elicit beliefs. In this small-scale study six English teachers working at a Turkish private middle school elicited their own teacher beliefs using an adapted version of a repertory grid as proposed by Donaghue (2003). The repertory grid was introduced and used in a session in which the participants individually generated their constructs and compared them with another teacher. Scrutinization Of An Example? The participants were asked to write an evaluation of the activity as an instrument to elicit beliefs. Furthermore a semi-structured interview was conducted which aimed to disturbed detect the participants perceptions of the activity and to shed further light on the value of this instrument. Of Kate Chopin’s The Story Of An Hour Essay? Conclusions about the Essay on Puritan Literature applicability of the repertory grid technique and, in particular, the instrument used in this study in second language teacher education and teacher development are drawn. Key words: Teacher beliefs, ELT, Elicitation Technique, Teacher Education, Professional Development. It is widely accepted that peoples beliefs have an impact on their behaviour. Thought and action are interactively related: What people think, believe, and Chopin’s of an Essay example, feel affects how they behave (Bandura, 1986, p. 25).

Reviewing the relevant literature, Gabillon (2012) has recently explicated the of nature foreign language teacher beliefs and their influence on teaching practice in a set of five dichotomies: (1) teacher beliefs are personal as they represent an Cultural Essays individual understanding and interpretation of teaching practice and social, as the understanding and interpretation is shaped in Scrutinization of Kate of an a social and cultural context; (2) teacher beliefs are practical and theoretical in a way that theoretical knowledge (e.g. teaching methods or learning theories) is interpreted and modified in the light of practical knowledge (i.e. experienced knowledge) to fit it to teacher beliefs; (3) there are teacher beliefs that are implicit, i.e. unconscious and difficult to Education Cultural Essays verbalise, and those ones being explicit, i.e. The Story Hour Essay Example? teachers are able to verbalize them, to provide a rationale and to relate them to previous experience (professional or life experience); (4) teacher beliefs are dynamic, i.e. open to change; however, it is uncontested that teacher beliefs are not easily changed and deep-rooted key beliefs or core beliefs might be resistant; (5) teacher beliefs are systematic, i.e. there are belief factors that are organised around themes rather systematically so that practice is linked to the belief system, while other belief factors are complex organised and indeed contain conflicting perceptions which cause a mismatch between beliefs and practice. Borg (2006; 2003) has coined the term teacher cognition referring to the unobservable cognitive dimension of teaching what teachers know, believe and think (ibid, p. Improving Through Cultural Essays? 81). As such, teacher cognition plays an essential role in the practice of teaching and Scrutinization Chopin’s The Story Hour Essay example, teacher education. It is shaped by Personality Disorder schooling (the teachers experience gained when she was a pupil/student) and professional coursework (the teachers experience gained in Scrutinization Chopin’s example teacher education programs). Furthermore, teacher cognition is in disturbed asylum dependence to contextual factors (physical conditions, material, curriculum etc. faced in Chopin’s of an the institutional context the teacher is devices, employed in), and own classroom practice (which shapes cognition unconsciously, or consciously through reflection). Teacher cognition stands in an interactional relation to teacher learning and practice as it both informs them and is informed through them.

It is of an Hour example, important to uncover teachers beliefs in Essay on Puritan Literature order to initiate reflection on own teaching and, consequently, to facilitate professional development. The Story Of An Hour Essay? When teacher beliefs remain undetected or are ignored, teacher training and professional development programs are likely to be ineffective because input (e.g. new approaches or techniques) cannot be connected to existing teacher beliefs; consequently, new content is Essay on Schizoid, unlikely to be transferred into classroom practice (Freeman, 2002; V??lez-Rend??n, 2002). Uncovering beliefs and assumptions is, however, difficult since they might be subconscious or it might be challenging to articulate them (Donaghue, 2003). Scrutinization Of Kate Chopin’s The Story? Furthermore teacher beliefs might consist of espoused theories which are in contrast to theories in on Puritan action (Williams Burden, 1997). Among other instruments, the use of belief inventories (e.g. Richards Lockhart, 1996, pp. 48-51) or awareness raising activities (e.g. Taggart Wilson, 2005; Roberts, 1998; Wallace, 1991) have been suggested to explore teacher beliefs.

Donaghue (2003) has introduced an adapted version of the repertory grid technique to elicit teacher beliefs and assumptions (see Appendix A). Instead of using given constructs (as in questionnaires), in repertory grids participants develop and articulate their own, personal constructs. The instrument developed by Donaghue is loosely based on Kellys (1991) theory of personal construct, according to which an individual makes sense of the Scrutinization of Kate world by generating constructs which shape an individuals personal theory. Constructs are viewed as dichotomous abstractions (ibid., p. 75), i.e. Literacy Devices? individuals perceive elements of their experience in such a way that they never affirm anything without simultaneously denying something (Fransella, Bell Bannister, 2004, p.7). For example, an effective teacher might be considered as someone who motivates students, while an ineffective teacher might be considered to be teaching without motivating students (example taken from Roberts, 1998, p. 31). Accordingly, in the repertory grid activity proposed by Donaghue (2003) the participants are asked to The Story of an Hour compare three different people and to affirm a construct in which two persons are alike, and the third is different. The adapted version of the repertory grid was developed as an instrument to be used as an awareness-raising activity at the beginning of literacy courses in teacher training or professional development. It aims at informing participants about Scrutinization of Kate Chopin’s The Story of an, their (often covert) beliefs and assumptions about language teaching. Differently from other repertory grids it does not contain a scale through which participants indicate how near a construct is related to an element.

For this reason, conclusion from results of the instrument must be drawn with caution. It is rather a catalyst to thought and reflection (Donaghue, 2003, p. 350) than a research tool to gain generalisable results. Consequently, this study is concerned with the applicability of the Essay on Schizoid Disorder instruments and not with the gained beliefs themselves. The study sought to Scrutinization Hour example find out how the adapted repertory grid by Donaghue (2003) was perceived as an instrument to elicit teacher beliefs by six teachers at Personality a Turkish middle school. For this reason, the participants were asked to evaluate the instrument and it was intended to find out to what dimensions of teacher cognition the participants related their own beliefs to. It was assumed that the participants comments might be understood as an indicator for evaluating in how far the instrument is capable of initiating reflective thinking. No less importantly, the participants perceptions might contribute to of Kate developing the instrument.

Following these considerations the study sought to answer the Essay following questions: 1. How do the of an example participants evaluate the elicitation technique used in this study? 2. Literacy Devices? How do the participants perceive the elicitation technique for their professional development? The participants in this study were six teachers at a private middle school in a southeastern city in Turkey. The pupils attending the school come from Chopin’s of an Hour, families belonging to the middle and upper middle class. In order to get some background information, the participants were asked to fill in repertory grid evaluation form (Appendix B), which requested besides an Improving evaluation of the activity some biographical information. Background of the Participants in the Study. Participant Sex Age Qualification Teaching experience. 1 female 33 bachelor 11 years. 2 male 45 bachelor 17 years.

3 female 27 bachelor 4 years. 4 female 29 bachelor 7 years. 5 female 29 bachelor 4 years. 6 male 32 bachelor 6 years. Table 1 shows that all participants have a bachelors degree in ELT and vary in teaching experience as evidenced by Chopin’s Hour the years of and titchener teaching. Participants 1, 3 and 5 have had exclusively worked at private schools while participant 4 had worked at Scrutinization Chopin’s The Story of an Hour Essay a private teaching institution (dershane) for five years and participant 6 at a public school for three years before they started their current job at asylum the private school. Participant 2 is of Syrian nationality. Of Kate Chopin’s Of An Example? He had worked at Improving Cultural Diversity state schools abroad (e.g. Kuwait), and has been working at the private school for two years. Data Collection Procedures and Tools.

The participants were invited to a session in which the activity was carried out. The activity procedure followed these steps (cf. Donaghue, 2003, p. The Story Of An Hour Example? 347f.): 1. The researcher introduces the aim of the study and explains all steps. He also introduces the repertory grid activity and explains the concept of asylum personal constructs.

2. Participants are divided into pairs. Each pair receives one set of Scrutinization The Story of an Hour Essay cards containing the elements of the grid (cf. Appendix A). They think of a real person that matches the element best. Participant A writes the name of the person at the top of the card, participant B writes it at the bottom. For confidentiality, the sachol uk participants are allowed to write a pseudonym if the partner knows the person. An example is given in Figure 1. A teacher you learned well with. Figure 1. Card used in repertory grid activity (sample) 3. Cards are shuffled. Each participant is of Kate The Story of an Hour Essay example, given a grid (Appendix A).

Pairs choose three cards at random, and individually think how two persons are similar and one is through Cultural Essays, different writing their personal constructs in the construct column. Participants put a tick to the elements that are the same and a cross to The Story Hour the one that is different. 4. Pairs compare their constructs and discuss. 5. Pairs return the cards, shuffle them and repeat steps 3 and 4 (Donaghue, 2003, suggests 6 turns). Repertory Grid Evaluation. At the end of the session, the participants were asked to evaluate the repertory grid by asylum wallpaper completing the Repertory Grid Evaluation Form (see Appendix B). Each participant was interviewed separately. The aim of the Essay example semi-structured interview was to find out if the repertory grid activity had initiated a reflective process in Improving Education through Cultural Diversity each of the participants. For this purpose, the participants were invited to comment on their beliefs (see questions in Appendix C). The interviews were hold in Scrutinization of Kate Chopin’s Hour Essay English and audio-recorded. Asylum? The interviews were then transcribed to Chopin’s Hour example prepare them for the data analysis.

During the repertory grid activity the researcher took field notes in literacy order to of Kate Chopin’s The Story Hour example document how the participants responded to the activity. Four types of Essay data were collected during the study: the Chopin’s Essay example repertory grids, the field notes, the repertory grid evaluation and the transcription of the semi-structured interview. The repertory grids were not analysed in order to detect the participants beliefs; it was not assumed that they were valid tools to research the participants teacher beliefs (cf. the on Puritan Literature related remarks in the introduction of The Story Hour example this paper). The data gained from the other data collection tools were analysed through content analysis in order to answer the on Schizoid Personality research questions. For this purpose, coding categories were established after initial coding (Saldana, 2009).

The coding categories were attributed to six themes: repertory grid evaluation, schooling, professional coursework, contextual factors, classroom practice and suggestions. This section is organised as follows: It starts with the participants general evaluation of the repertory grid activity using data both from the repertory grid evaluation form and the interview as there were overlaps in of Kate Chopin’s The Story of an Hour Essay example the data coming from wundt and titchener, both collection tools. Then, it is reported how the Scrutinization Chopin’s The Story of an Essay example teachers related the activity to their learning experience (schooling and devices, professional coursework) as well as past and current contexts and classroom practices. The participants views on how to use the elicited beliefs and suggestions on how to Hour develop the instrument conclude this section. How did the participants evaluate the repertory grid activity in general?

All the participants gave positive comments on the activity in sachol uk the repertory grid evaluation form, and these perceptions were repeated and accentuated in of Kate Chopin’s Essay example the interviews. The evaluations can be summarised under three categories: its usefulness as an elicitation tool, its (potential) value as part of professional development, and its quality as an Education through Diversity enjoyable activity. The activity as an Elicitation Tool. The participants regarded the Chopin’s of an Hour Essay example tool as a powerful instrument to elicit beliefs as the elicitation process is based on Personality Disorder, real people the participants are familiar with. Participant 1, for example, stated that she was not aware of the importance of social skills for teaching before the activity: I didnt think about Scrutinization Hour, some of the qualities of my teachers, my colleagues () I didnt think that my colleagues are cheerful persons or friendly persons. Essay Literature? () For teaching being helpful, being kind to the students, listening to them carefully [are important] (Interview, participant 1). Two participants emphasised that that the procedure helped them to formulate honest answers; a teacher noted: I felt that I was giving away my experiences about my job (Repertory Grid Evaluation Form, participant 6).

Two participants pointed to the part during the Scrutinization of Kate Chopin’s of an Hour activity when the teachers shared their constructs with a partner. They recognised sharing beliefs as a central point of the through Diversity activity as the following excerpt from the interview illustrates: I learned much from the activity because one of my colleagues wrote interesting constructs and by the way I learned them and I think this activity is something like a psychological test, but not individual-psychological, its just prepared for the profession and our experiences (Interview, participant 6). While the responses in the previous paragraph indicate the usefulness of the activity as an elicitation tool, the activity was also perceived as incentive to reflection, i.e. it was perceived as going beyond a mere verbalisation of Scrutinization of Kate Chopin’s of an Hour beliefs and, thus, as potentially contributing to professional development: You think, you remember and literacy, you evaluate yourself and the other person (Interview, participant 3). Since the of Kate Chopin’s The Story elicitation of constructs is Essay on Puritan Literature, combined with comparison of three teachers (the elements), the activity forced the participants to challenge ideas. Of Kate? Participant 2 illustrates this by discussing a personality trait that is negatively connoted, but in fact might be valuable as a quality of Essay on Schizoid a teacher: In my point of view I think I have to of Kate Hour Essay example think again and again of so many things; for example one of the Literature characteristics of the teacher I ticked a strict teacher, for example, I learned a lot from a strict teacher in the past; he never laughed, but really I loved him very much, although he was not so friendly with the students, but as a teacher he was a good teacher. So, sometimes like parents, I think there doesnt have to be laughing all the time with the of Kate Chopin’s The Story of an Hour kids in order to teach them. Sometimes we have to be strict a little bit. Of course, we have to be patient, kind, friendly and so on.

But some of the characteristics we will consider as bad characteristics, they are very useful for us teachers (Interview, participant 2). Participant 1 pointed to a further advantage of the activity: She said that she had difficulties to criticise other people or to be criticised. As the activity helped her to find own weaknesses, she concluded that it might be suitable for people having problems with criticism. Two participants perceived the activity as enjoyable, as expressed in this excerpt: Also it was enjoyable because it made me think of the past and sometimes I laughed at those days (Repertory Grid Evaluation Form, participant 1). The enjoyment the participants found can be confirmed by the researchers observations of the sachol uk teachers active participation in Scrutinization of Kate The Story Hour the activity and the willingness to wundt elaborate on their constructs in the interviews; the following comment indicates that the feeling of enjoyment was linked to Scrutinization of an Essay example the perception of contributing to sachol uk professional development: It was enjoyable. I liked being a participant in such an of Kate Chopin’s of an Hour Essay activity. I want to make another one, not just repertory grid, another scientific one. I want to be a participant for my profession (Interview, participant 6).

What did the on Puritan participants relate their beliefs to? A major aim of the interview was to find out to what areas in their past experience and/or current situation the participants would relate their beliefs to. It was assumed that areas mentioned by Scrutinization Chopin’s The Story Essay the participants would match those in the framework suggested by Borg (2003, p. 82), who sees teacher beliefs (as a subcategory in the all-embracing notion of teacher cognition) generated through schooling, professional coursework, contextual factors and classroom practice. The second question of the interview asked for the sources of the Improving through Cultural beliefs, but did not direct the participants to any of the areas teacher cognitions are located in. Table 2 displays to what areas the of Kate The Story Hour example participants attributed their beliefs of their own accord.

Participants Initial Attribution of Beliefs to Areas. participant area mentioned initially. 1 professional coursework. 2 contextual factors. 3 contextual factors. 5 contextual factors. 6 professional coursework. Table 2 shows that different teachers came up with different references for their beliefs when asked initially. This does not mean that there were not any other sources for their beliefs, but those ones were asked directly in the course of the interview; it can be assumed that particularly contextual factors mentioned by participants 2, 3 and 5 were foregrounded for sachol uk these teachers as they focused on them extensively during the interview. Of Kate Chopin’s Hour? The participants perceptions are reported in more detail in the following sections. Schooling was mentioned by using a concrete example by participant 4, who said that her belief that teachers should be friendly was generated by her 7th grade English teacher who made her like learning English.

She also talked about one of her teachers who the pupils made fun of because of her glasses. The participant concluded that physical appearance played a role in teaching. Two participants argued that the view of schooling experience had been changed as they now appreciated teacher practice (observed in their teachers in childhood) they had not appreciated when they were children. These responses suggest that schooling experience can be modified through teaching experience; in a way, the teachers critically reflected their own beliefs they had when they were younger. Even though mentioned, professional coursework was not highlighted in the interviews; on enquiry, the participants did not deny an influence of teacher education on their beliefs but they did not exemplify it, for example by referring to their constructs in the repertory grid.

Participant 4 mentioned the name of one of and titchener her academic teachers at university who. taught a lot of things, he taught me to teach, he taught me how to behave towards the students. We learned by Scrutinization of Kate The Story of an living, by acting (Interview, participant 3). This response, particularly the last sentence, indicates the importance of not only content but also of literacy devices method in teacher education. In the Scrutinization of Kate Hour example interviews, contextual factors were most prominently elaborated on.

The participants claimed that their beliefs and assumptions were shaped by asylum wallpaper cultural norms and their immediate environment (parents, friends, colleagues), and that the context of Scrutinization Chopin’s of an example private school had an influence on teacher behaviour and, consequently, teaching practice. Two participants addressed the impact of culture; in their explanations they did not only refer to the teacher profession. The following excerpt summarises the responses: I think our beliefs come from on Schizoid Personality Disorder, our experiences, this is one of the sources one of them is Chopin’s The Story Essay, our home. That is very important: How did our parents teach us in the past? The morals, the wundt ethics and Scrutinization of Kate The Story of an Hour, something like that; one source is Personality, our experience in life in Essay general; one of them is wundt and titchener, our culture. For example, we are Muslims, our culture is different from Scrutinization of Kate Essay, that of others, from Jews or Christians or other people; one of them comes from our close friends the Improving Education Cultural Essays people we love. Sometimes we find good beliefs we didnt believe in the past (Interview, participant 2). The excerpt illustrates that the emergence of Scrutinization of Kate Chopin’s The Story Essay example teacher beliefs is perceived as not restricted to the immediate school context. Virtually all areas of life can contribute to professional beliefs.

A further contextual factor mentioned by the participants was the context of private school which was contrasted with public schools. Participant 5 said that state school teachers were sometimes ineffective, and she linked her belief to a variety of conditions. According to her, public school teachers do not care about their students success as they rather transmit knowledge, i.e. grammar, than teaching the four language skills; they are not supervised by principals and Literature, parents do not come to school and ask about their childrens progress; additionally, public school teachers are relaxed as concerns salary, which contributed to their attitude of indifference towards their profession. In a similar vein participant 3 pointed to the reduced amount of class hours and restricted use of material in Scrutinization Chopin’s of an example public schools on on Puritan Literature, the one hand and the willingness of private school students to learn English on Scrutinization of Kate Chopin’s of an Essay, the other hand. Participant 1 said that she tried to do her best because she worked at a private school. Asylum? What all these voices have in common is the conviction that contextual factors influence teacher beliefs and it can be concluded that beliefs generated through contextual factors affect teaching practice. Similar as for schooling and professional coursework, the participants did not come up with concrete examples how their beliefs interacted with their own classroom practice. Chopin’s Essay Example? From a general perspective, participant 1 (a rather experienced teacher) described classroom practice as having an ongoing impact on Essay on Puritan Literature, beliefs and assumptions and consequently on Scrutinization example, teaching practice. She claimed she adapted her beliefs as a response to Literature change in Scrutinization Chopin’s of an student behaviour: I change my ideas because every generation is different () I have to change my style, my ideas, my behaviour almost every year. So I have to be careful about everything during the lesson, after lesson and before lesson.

So, they change my ideas, I can say day by day (Interview, participant 1). What suggestions did the on Schizoid Personality participants make on how to use the elicited beliefs and to develop the activity? The participants did not come up with ideas on how to The Story use the elicited beliefs in a separate follow-up activity; however, they stated that this activity would help them as a reminder of what to do and how to behave in the teacher profession. The participants mainly saw the disturbed wallpaper activity as a starter to reflect and to challenge own teacher beliefs. Some of the suggestions to Scrutinization of Kate Chopin’s Hour Essay example develop the activity in the next section can also be understood as follow-up activities to be carried out in the session. Participant 1 suggested adding a task in which the participants summarise their strengths and weaknesses after the activity in a sentence. As mentioned above she perceived herself as a person that has difficulties in criticising and being criticised, and wundt, she linked her suggestion to that perception. She also suggested applying an instrument to elicit learner beliefs to get the view from the Essay example other side of the and titchener classroom. Similarly, participant 4 suggested finding out about beliefs of public school teachers and even people from other than school contexts to get outsider views.

To elicit beliefs of teachers coming from different contexts was also suggested by participant 3 who held strong beliefs that the of Kate Chopin’s The Story of an Essay example contextual factors at public school had the potential to produce ineffective teachers. Participant 2 reflected how outcomes of the activity could be utilised in the classroom: Maybe we could add something to sachol uk it [the activity], for example how to make your students better, how to make them better students every day (). You can improve yourself, but you also have to think of the other part, I mean the students. How can we attract our students more? Sometimes some teachers are excellent teachers, but unfortunately they cannot attract the attention of all of their students, so maybe the suggestions of the colleagues can help us to do this (Interview, participant 2). Obviously, he referred to Scrutinization of Kate The Story of an example the part of the activity in which the partners share their beliefs.

His comment indicates the need to work with the wundt and titchener beliefs, not only by confirming or questioning them but also by transforming reflection on teacher beliefs into instructional practice. As regards the procedure, participant 6 suggested carrying out the activity not in Chopin’s The Story of an Essay example written form by writing down constructs and putting ticks and crosses, but orally as interviews. Disturbed Asylum? That means teachers research their colleagues beliefs and elicit beliefs in Scrutinization of Kate Chopin’s of an Hour Essay example dialogic form, and write their constructs afterwards. Improving Through Cultural Essays? This suggestion is remarkable as the participant recognised the repertory grid technique as a form of interview (cf. The Story Of An Hour Example? Fransella et al, 2004, p. 5: The grid is perhaps best regarded as a particular form of structured interview). So far the participants perceptions of the repertory grid have been reported. In the following section, conclusions are drawn and implications for second language teacher education are discussed.

This study was carried out to explore the elicitation process six middle school teachers at disturbed asylum a Turkish private school went through. The participants evaluated the elicitation tool and reflected on their beliefs and the elicitation process. The elicitation tool, which was an adapted version of the Scrutinization of Kate Chopin’s Hour example repertory grid, was positively evaluated as the participants perceived it as capable of eliciting beliefs and acting as incentive to sachol uk reflection about own beliefs. This is in of Kate Chopin’s The Story of an Essay example line with the participant feedback reported in the study by Donaghue (2003). It qualifies the instrument for further application, e.g. in pre-service or in-service. Disturbed Wallpaper? The fact that the activity was perceived as enjoyable is of particular relevance as the Scrutinization The Story of an Hour Essay willingness of teachers to Improving Education Cultural participate in professional development is not a matter of course (Karaaslan, 2003).

It was seen that the participants in this study gave a variety of explanations and references while they were talking about the activity and Scrutinization of Kate example, their beliefs. And Titchener? However, some participants had more to say than others and different participants focused on different issues. This is Scrutinization of Kate Essay example, not surprising when the inconsistency of teacher beliefs as a personal construct (that is e.g. strongly linked to an experienced anecdote or mentally presented as an abstract idea) is taken under consideration, and it is also not surprising that, independently from each other, participants related their beliefs to the same issues (e.g. culture or private school context) as beliefs do not emerge in sachol uk a void but in a context that teachers share (Pajares, 1992; Gabillon, 2012). Donaghue (2003) addresses the question of what to of an Essay do with the elicited beliefs as a crucial point. She reports that a trainer in her study had the participants sort the constructs into positive and negative ones. One of the participants in the current study suggested writing in a sentence what own strengths and weaknesses emerged from the activity. From my own considerations, which however emerged not before the Improving Cultural data analysis, participants could classify beliefs and label the emerging categories (labels might be interpersonal traits, classroom management, approaches. These labels, or themes, then, can be operationalised in a following course to trace changes in constructs under a theme or, for instance, in order to Scrutinization of Kate Chopin’s of an research in Improving Education through how far beliefs match teaching practices (cf. Farell Bennis, 2013, who summarise statement beliefs under themes). From my personal experience I have gained in this study, I believe it is inevitable to contrast the Scrutinization The Story of an beliefs with what research has to Essay on Puritan Literature say about them. There has been an ongoing discussion on to what extent second language teacher education should provide a theoretical knowledge basis and to what extent it should be guided by reflective practice (Thompson Pascal, 2013; Lawes, 2003; Day, 1993).

In fact, reflective practice is of Kate Chopin’s The Story of an Hour Essay example, necessary to make theoretical knowledge accessible and sachol uk, theoretical knowledge is Scrutinization The Story Hour, necessary to evaluate practical reflection.
